The picture here is from a couple of weeks ago so don’t get confused A lot of times there is a “Thank you” here and there on the corner, and I appreciate it because they seem genuine and it’s nice to feel that our people understand we are there for them. We always say a prayer before opening the packages and I’ve been reminded on the times when I’ve forgotten or just felt lazy. It really is a bunch who know how to be thankful for what they have. What we are all given. Now I like Dave Laney’s approach whenever he’s down there (unfortunately they’ve moved on) is to say “Don’t thank me, thank Jesus”…but I’m not as cool, and I usually just say “You’re welcome, God Bless”…but that’s not my story… Still, I got a nice compliment from one of our friends who said talking to me is his therapy and it’s meant a lot to him over the years. He’ a guy who smiles a lot and has a lot of interesting stories. It’s hard to imagine he has much of a hard time getting anyone to listen, but I remember that he was a man of fewer words before we became friends. He also doesn’t tend to wear his sunglasses around me much anymore, and I’ve wondered to myself if that was symbolic. He says other people wave religion over peoples head like they’re better than everyone else “Not like you”, he made a point of saying. That’s pretty nice, right? Anyway, this weekend there were literally 2 people on the corner. I don’t blame them, it was the coldest day so far this winter. But I needed opinions for my psychology course and with no one there I was sort of sunk. Thankfully, when I went to the homeless shelter to deliver the remainder of our stuff (there was a lot of bread since only two people were there, but my general thoughts are…if they come out in a winter this cold…they are in NEED, and to those two, it was important), but back to my problems, there were plenty of people there at the center hiding from the cold. So I handed out my surveys there by being able to also call in a favor from the directors who knew me well by this point. So long story short…well not real short I guess…I got all the data I needed for my survey paper. I felt validated a lot by these events, which is always a great feeling. I love it when we can bring large donations to the Bethlehem House. The Bethlehem House is more than just a shelter for Pregnant women, they help educate them, and obtain their goals. Bethlehem House’ mission: “We will provide support to pregnant women to choose life for their unborn child in a residential environment both during and after pregnancy. We will educate the woman on child care and personal life skills to assist them to be self sufficient.” Last night, thanks to Elaine and her husband, we received another wonderful donation from Super Saver and half of it is going to the Bethlehem House and the other half to the Steven Center.
We received an amazing sweet donation from Super Saver thanks to Elaine! Thank you! |
